So You Think You Want To Run
Have you thought about running for office? We need Democrats running at all levels of government, and we will help you!
Five years ago this week, everyone who could went home to evade the pandemic. In typical pandemic “time is a flat circle” fashion it both feels like yesterday and an eternity ago. And that’s not just because human memory is famously fallible, and why they’re always trying to talk to witnesses as soon as they can in every cop show, ever. The memory-holing of the pandemic is apparently a very real thing. And combined with the sanewashing of Donald Trump it’s….kind of like we just skipped through the interregnum – of increasing stability and a better economy – into some ongoing continuum of godawful headlines on the daily.
Are we having fun yet? So much winning!
If you’re here, very likely you are not having fun yet and also, what winning again?
This is the part where we want to point out that although national elections are important, there is a great deal of democracy, elections, choices, policies, and legislating that happens on a daily basis much closer to home. There is an election happening nearly every month in the country.
Between your local city and town halls, county boards of supervisors, municipal boards, registrars, county clerks, and oh yes, school boards, there is a huge amount of democracy and voting over which Mr. Trump and his current trifecta of a whole Republican White House, Senate, and House of Representatives does not – yet – get to DOGE-ify. This bedrock of American democracy is still a bulwark that the grassroots voter – that’s you, reading this – gets to shape.
In 2025 alone, Ballotpedia estimates there will be over 100,000 seats open, nationwide. And school boards and city councils will dominate the number of open seats.
Here’s the thing though – Democrats are not running as much as they can. We are, by default, ceding ground to uncontested Republicans. (Which then allows Mr. Trump to claim a “mandate.” No. He won a plurality. That is not the same thing. And we will never tire of pointing that out.)
We get it. Running is a big step. Where to even start? Especially if you are not someone who’s ever considered such a thing? But that’s why NDTC was founded – to make sure that anyone who wants to, can run for office. To demystify the process and remove the barriers that keep people who can and should from running for office and making a positive difference in their communities.
And it’s why one of our most popular courses is So You Think You Want To Run? We offer a lot of courses on every aspect of running for office and running a campaign. But this one is always packed because it’s a natural starting point for everyone.
You can start right now – with our curated online academy for a self-paced start. Because hey, chances are you have a full life. (Unless you’re independently wealthy, don’t have to work for a living and have all the time in the world – in which case, may we introduce you to our amazing Development Director?!)
American history is full of people who decided they were tired of the potholes that wouldn’t get fixed, the town development plans that didn’t make sense, the lack of funding for the local library and school labs, and more. All the Lauren Underwoods and Maxwell Frosts and AOCs started somewhere, very likely like the spot you might be in right now.
If you’d like to run for office, join us at NDTC. We’re here to help – let’s see how we can work together to preserve and shape democracy for our communities.
