Thirteen Americans are dead. Gas is over $4 a gallon. Iran now controls who passes through the Strait of Hormuz and is charging a toll. The regime is still standing. The enriched uranium is still unaccounted for even though Trump says we can track it with satellites. (Spoiler: we cannot.) And experts are calling this ceasefire a two-week pause, not a peace.
This was entirely unnecessary. And it was entirely predictable.
How We Got Here
Remember, in 2025 Trump launched missile strikes and announced: “Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.” He called it a “spectacular military success” and posted on Truth Social: “It was my great honor to Destroy All Nuclear facilities & capability, and then, STOP THE WAR!”
When an initial U.S. assessment found only one nuclear enrichment site had been mostly destroyed, while the other two were likely degraded and only setting progress back several months, Trump attacked the assessment as fake news. The Pentagon even fired DIA Director Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse in August 2025, apparently for telling the truth.
This February, the White House was simultaneously insisting the 2025 strikes “did, in fact, obliterate Iran’s nuclear facilities” while Trump’s own envoy Steve Witkoff was saying Iran was “probably a week away from having industrial-grade bomb-making material.”
Those are two contradictory statements.
Then, while nuclear negotiations were actively ongoing in Geneva and reportedly making progress, Trump launched Operation Epic Fury anyway. This was not a response to an emergency. It was a deliberate choice.
A choice made, it should be noted, just as Epstein file revelations were closing in and Google searches for those files were at a peak. Within days of the bombs dropping, those searches plummeted.
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie put it plainly: “Bombing a country on the other side of the globe won’t make the Epstein files go away.“
What We Got For it
Thirteen Americans killed. 373 wounded. A Minnesota mother of two. An Iowa college student. A 54-year-old grandfather from Sacramento. All Army reservists from Des Moines, killed when an Iranian drone hit their makeshift operations center in Kuwait. No warning, no siren.
Gas prices up 38% in six weeks. Diesel up 49%. J.P. Morgan warns prices could hit $5 a gallon. The price spike, analysts say, will remain structurally elevated even after the Strait reopens, because governments around the world are now hoarding reserves in anticipation of the next round, and it will take years to rebuild the energy infrastructure destroyed in this conflict.
And Iran’s 10-point peace plan, which Trump called a “workable basis,” includes Iranian control of the Strait, the right to keep enriching uranium, lifting all sanctions, halting attacks on Hezbollah, paying reparations, and withdrawing all U.S. combat forces from the Middle East. That’s not a negotiation. That’s a hostage note.
If Iran gets even half of what it’s asking, we end this war in a worse position than when we started it.
The Answer That Was Always Right in Front of Us
Want to know what makes this worse than a tragedy? Tragedies are unavoidable. This wasn’t.
The Pentagon, not exactly a liberal think tank, has said for years that dependence on fossil fuels is one of America’s greatest national security vulnerabilities. Every carrier strike group we deploy to the Persian Gulf, every soldier we station in Kuwait, every war we fight over oil chokepoints, that’s the price of addiction. It’s not a climate argument. It’s a freedom argument.
The day America runs on solar, wind, and American-made electric vehicles is the day we never have to threaten Iran again. Or Venezuela. Or any other petrostate that happens to be sitting on something we need. Energy independence through renewables isn’t idealism, it’s the most practical and common-sense national security strategy available to us.
But Trump doesn’t get it.
Trump’s entire political identity is nostalgia for a past that wasn’t real for most Americans, a world of smokestacks and cheap gas and dominance through pure military force. That world is gone. And chasing it is costing us the future.
He cut EV incentives. He mocked renewable energy. He rolled back efficiency standards. And while he was doing all of that, China was sprinting. China now dominates EV manufacturing, solar panel production, and battery technology, not because they care about the environment, but because they understand that whoever controls clean energy technology controls the 21st century economy.
He has spent his entire life certain he knows better than anyone, including the people who actually studied the problem. The difference now is that his failures don’t end in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They end in flag-draped coffins at Dover Air Force Base.
What Democrats Need to Say and How to Say it
This is where Democrats have to be clear, direct, and relentless. Not in the language of policy papers. In the language of kitchen tables.
Unnecessary wars drive up energy costs. Full stop.
Every gallon of gas you pumped this week costs more because Trump chose war over diplomacy.
Every food delivery, Amazon package, or groceries that arrived late or cost more was touched by the diesel spike his war created.
Every family road trip, every commute, every heating bill, that’s the Iran war tax, and every American is paying it.
That’s not partisan spin. That’s what happened. That’s what’s happening right now.
What’s at Stake
Our kids are going to inherit whatever world we build right now. If we stay on this road of fossil fuel dependency, manufactured conflicts, abandoned diplomacy, and kneecapped clean energy, we won’t free ourselves from Middle Eastern oil. We’ll just trade that dependence for dependence on Chinese technology, because we let them win the race we refused to run.
Thirteen Americans have already died in a war we didn’t have to fight, over oil we don’t have to need, to protect a supply chain we had every reason to replace. That’s not a foreign policy failure. That’s a choice made deliberately and repeatedly by people who knew better and didn’t care.
Democrats need to say that out loud. Voters understand it. They’re living it right now every time they pull up to the pump.

TrainDems-sure wish you or actually anyone could train our feckless cowardly dems now in office to stand up in this moment and do exactly what you say and speak truth to power!!! Loudly!!! Or even at all!!!! But they won’t and have actually said very little while bombs continue to fall and real people continue to die, including our very own military personnel!!! And still nothing of consequence from those silent democratic lips as they just twiddle their thumbs while the world burns and innocent people die. Mumbling among themselves serves absolutely no use to anyone even if it does make a bit of news.
